The time of the pandemic has not deprived and stopped the University of Latvia (UL) from reaching new peaks. During the 2021/2022 academic year, the University of Latvia is offering 12 new study programs, 5 new patrons joined the existing patronage of the University of Latvia and the response from students was higher than ever - a total of 456 applications for scholarships were received.

4 new bachelor’s degree programs have been created at the UL. 2 new study programs have been created at the master's level, while 6 new study programs have been created at the doctoral level. Last year, two new and important study programs were established, which were supported by the patrons of the University of Latvia “Biosan” and SIA “Mikrotīkls” – “Epidemiology and Medical Statistics” and “Biotechnology and Bioengineering”.

The UL Foundation is supported by long-term patrons, but they are joined by new supporters every year. During the 2021/2022 academic year, 5 new patrons joined the foundation, supporting aspiring students. In total, students were able to apply for 35 sets of scholarships, the new ones being the Gustavs Zemgals Memorial Scholarship, the Skrastiņš&Dzenis Scholarship, the Kundziņi Family Scholarship, the Valka Municipality Scholarship and the Alfrēds M. Zoltners Excellence Scholarship in Mathematics. Students' response to the scholarships was higher than ever.

A total of 456 student scholarship applications were received. 146 students applied for first-year scholarships, 297 second-year students applied for scholarships, but 14 students applied for doctoral scholarships. In total, 128 students received scholarships for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Laila Kundziņa, Executive Director of the University of Latvia Foundation, says: “It is important that we support our students – we need to take care of future education. It is great that new study programs appear at the University of Latvia every year, which proves that the University of Latvia is a university that keeps up with the times. This is definitely important for every patron, even for those who are not in Latvia. Native roots remain here and the desire to invest in student education is high. Students are also happy to accept the support provided by the University of Latvia, because time for studies is very busy and important, so the financial support of the scholarship is an opportunity for students to spend all their time studying and not looking for work to cover their everyday expenses”.
