American Latvian businessman and professor Andris Zoltners has decided to donate 120,000 US dollars to support the development of the mathematics industry at the University of Latvia by establishing the "Alfreds M. Zoltners Scholars" program. Alfreds was Andris' father and will be remembered by the new scholarship program, which aims to support outstanding mathematicians so that they can create top-level research at the University of Latvia.

Describing his scholarship prof. Andris Zoltners says: “I am interested in supporting because my parents loved Latvia, and I am interested in helping new professors to develop. Latvia cannot grow without education. ”

Currently prof. Andris (Endijs) Zoltners is Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University, one of the University's Professors of Excellence (Frederic Esser Nemmers Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University), founder of ZS Associates. This company is not only one of the largest companies in trade analytics in the world, but also one of the most successful consulting companies in the United States and in 2005 was elected a company of excellence in Chicago. In 2012, prof. Zoltner received an award from the U.S. Pharmaceutical Management Association for a lifetime investment in the industry. Prof. Zoltners is the author and co-author of several monographs as well as several influential studies. Prof. Zoltners's research center is research in management trade analytics.

The donation was made possible with the help of the US non-profit organization “Friends of the University of Latvia”. Roberts Blumbergs, a member of the board of the organization, in cooperation with UL professors Jurģis Šķilters, Mārcis Auziņš and Andris Ambainis developed both the principles of cooperation and the format of scholarship.

The selection of scholarship holders will start already this summer. Both the US and Latvian scientists and supporters of the University of Latvia are satisfied with this initiative, as it will mean a significant increase in the quality of mathematical sciences at the University of Latvia.

The donation in Latvia will be administered by the University of Latvia Foundation. The competition will be announced by the University of Latvia Foundation on July 1, the opportunity to apply will be until August 1, 23:59, by sending applications to fonds@fonds.lv.
