This year, the outstanding professor of medicine and solo singer Jānis V. Kļaviņš would celebrate his 100th birthday. In honour of this event, his honorary scholarship calls for donations.

The scholarship is closely related to Jānis V. Kļaviņš’s curriculum vitae. Its goal is to support a talented LU student, who is occupied with research in oncology (https://ziedot.lu.lv/kampana/ziedojumi-profesora-jana-v-klavina-pieminai/). Before the war ended, Jānis V. Kļaviņš studied in the Faculty of Medicine of Univerity of Latvia, as well as sang in the LU student mixed choir “Dziesmuvara”.

In his career as a scientist in the US, Jānis V. Kļaviņš worked as a pathology professor at Duke University, Columbia University, Cornell University College of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was the director of the pathology department in the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens. His whole life’s work was connected to cancer treatment research, especially with so-called cancer markers.

Jānis V. Kļaviņš himself had received financial support and motivation for studies during his study years. He was very well aware of the effect that a helping push can give to the young scientist. His son, Filips Kalniņš, recalls: “Dad never rejected help, support and requests, for example, in laboratories lead by him, countless opportunities were given to smart young people to work and gain new theoretical, as well as practical knowledge. In memory of their father, his family wishes to continue to support young Latvian scientists in his spirit by creating a scholarship fund in his memory. Scholarships will be given to students who research oncology. I am very happy to be a part of the committee, to hear out and see the fervour of students in research. That’s why I hope that this year, on my father’s 100th birthday, we will manage to attract more donations to this valuable goal.”
