Competition in the fields of medical and natural sciences ended just before Easter. The residual value of the previous donation, which the UL Foundation received from the patron “Mikrotīkls”, is 112000 euros, but this year the foundation will receive another 500000 euros donation. This amount of money will be given to doctoral students and competition winners so that they would be able to develop their projects. 27 project applications were submitted to the competition, which total amount reached 716,324 euros. Most applications were submitted by the Faculty of Medicine, followed by the Institute of Astronomy and other branches of the University of Latvia. 

The smallest project application was for 2072 euros. This amount of money is needed to perform geophysical research of Strenči magnetic anomaly, creating a geophysical model and geological interpretation, combining and analyzing magnetometric and gravimetric measurement data obtained in the project work, as well as data from previous researches.  

In contrast, the largest project application was in the amount of 100,000 euros intended for the study of  proteasome systems, DNA damage, nitric oxide metabolism and its specificity, as well as the role of genetic factors in resistance or susceptibility to COVID-19 infection.

The patron of the UL Foundation - "Mikrotīkls" will continue cooperation with the foundation and this year another 500,000 euros will be donated, of which 180,000 euros will be diverted to doctoral students and 432,000 euros will be available for projects to help realize various ideas.
