University of Latvia, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classical Philology, Centre for Hellenic Studies and Latin Culture Heritage Centre invite you to participate in the 5th International Classical Philology Biennial Conference ANTIQUITAS VIVA 2016: Word in Dictionary and Text (April 7–8, 2016, Riga, Latvia).

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS EXTENDED

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS ACCEPTED UNTIL JANUARY 25, 2016

A popular Latin phrase says that words have value as much as money (verba valent sicut nummi). The word and words in the humanities are perceived as a nominal currency the movement of which is under the auspices of the philological thought.

The International Classical Philology Biennial Conference Antiquitas Viva, paying special attention to classical languages, welcomes its participants to research, describe and share the experience and conclusions about various manifestations of the word, from its functioning in a dictionary and “behind the scene” of compilation of the dictionary till the relationships between the word and the text.

Words, considering the social and cultural relations of a particular historical period, create texts and contexts. The variety of the created meanings should be reflected in the dictionary, i.e. in the tool that records the grammatical and semantic picture of the language. Various spheres of the humanities (linguistics, literary studies, history, philosophy), working together, can offer a versatile description of these questions that might lead towards an interesting scholarly discussion.

You are welcome to submit a filled-in application form (APPLICATION FORM) and the summary of your presentation (please refer to the next page) to the organizing committee of the conference until January 25, 2016.
